Joseph R. Lapointe was born at Waverly, Iowa on November 21, 1952 to Francis
and Betty Lou Lapointe. The oldest of ten children, Joe grew up in Mason City, Iowa.
Joe graduated from Mason City High School in 1971. Joe completed high school
in two years and was a National Merit Finalist. He was named one of America’s five
most outstanding high school students by Who’s Who in American High Schools. Joe
attended undergraduate school at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
At Iowa, Joe was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English, cum
laude, in 1973, having graduated from college in less than three years.
Joe graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1978 and was awarded
a degree of Juris Doctor with honors. Joe worked from 1973 to 1976 as a claims adjuster
for Continental Western Insurance Company in Waterloo, Iowa.
In 1978 Joe joined the Law Offices of Warren L. DeVries where he worked for
two years, primarily in the area of insurance defense litigation.
Joe started his own law firm in 1980 and has been practicing law in Mason City
Joe was named the Iowa Lawyer of the Year in 1985 in recognition of his record
of providing pro bono legal services to the poor.
Joe was the founder of the North Iowa /Transition Center, a halfway house for
the mentally disabled in Mason City and was the 1992 democratic candidate for state
Joe is a member And past president of the Cerro Gordo County Bar Association,
the Sub-district 2A Bar Association, and the Iowa State Bart Association. He is
a member of the bar of the United States District Court for the Northern District
of Iowa and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Joe is experienced in and practices in many different areas of law, including
criminal defense, divorce and family law, personal injury litigation, bankruptcy,
and probate, real estate and contract law
Joe and his wife, Jenifer, are at home in Mason City, Joe’s children Francis
and Ruth attend college. He enjoys golf, fishing and playing the piano.
